Speech & Language Vocabulary Groups
Introducing Online Vocabulary Groups
π Letβs Communicate LTD is celebrating the start of its online speech and language groups with a vocabulary focus.
π’ BBC News recently shared that a total of 42,341 children required extra support in 2021/22, up from 38,560 in 2020/21 (just the figures for Year 1 students in the UK)
π¬ Groups are run weekly via zoom by a qualified speech and language therapist. Using specific speech and language programs designed to support receptive and expressive language through vocabulary development.
π¬ Why Vocabulary?
We know that our students with speech, language and communication needs or dyslexia often have vocabulary difficulties. Their poor oral and reading comprehension can be indicators of this. A strong vocabulary is essential for academic progress but in a nut shell, it is the basis of all language.
βGood language at age five correlates with better academic attainment, good mental health in later years, improved social interaction and relationship building and better employment outcomes.β
Further evidence:
β Vocabulary at age five is a strong predictor of the qualifications achieved at school leaving age and beyond.
β Good language, particularly vocabulary at age 13, is a strong predictor of better outcomes at GCSE.
β Spoken language is a key component in all learning and a key lever in raising attainment for all children and young people.
β Vocabulary is vital for comprehension, crucial for writing and classroom learning; it is an area of weakness for reluctant readers.
The Group
π» The group is run online with a maximum of 8 students. It is run every week by a qualified trained speech and language therapist.
β° The group lasts 40 minutes. Each week therapists record progress; this will be communicated at the end of each term with parents.
π The groups use evidence-based resources that will be tailored for the group.
π³ The group costs Β£20 a week. Students should attend weekly to ensure the best outcomes. Invoices are sent on the 1st of each month.
π§βπ« Groups are split by primary/secondary. There may be exceptions due to suitability.
